Fuck Discord -- Matrix is VIP

IRC is cool and all but it's 2021. Fork in the road:
Discord OR Matrix.

We currently don't have a proper Matrix server of our own yet, but that doesn't matter because you can just join whatever server you want and then connect to channels, or make channels to share with others. Matrix is like IRC -- channel based, channels are atoms, the admin "owns" their own channel to some degree -- users are free to create new channels, and unlike IRC, permissions management is simple AND real end-to-end encryption is possible.

Unlike Discord, where the "channel group" is created first and then contains its exclusive channels within it (with a shared power structure), Matrix users can also freely create "channel groups" for relevant channels, for private use or social use, to help organize similar channels by concept or intention. This radical inversion of the paradigm is naturally more in line with VIP values and return a more natural, bottom-up sense of vision to this space that corporate entities seek to seize and exploit to maladaptive ends.

Remember IRC? It's dead now, RIP IRC. Come now to the future.
Let's make channels together and build the virtual spaces we lost.

No

Matrix is good but >>1-kun is decidedly unvip.

``how dare someone propose an alternative to discord for our community''
Cool, have fun on our IRC where we get like 30 lines of chat a week.

Matrix sounds cool but all the terminal clients are written in Python 3 or some shit. Is there an Irssi plugin I could use? And can you use Matrix pseudonymously, like (say) Rizon?
13 Name: VIPPER 2021-10-12 18:33
https://wiki.bitlbee.org/HowtoMatrix

A number of the rooms in the "VIP matrix space" are linked to Rizon IRC already:
tanasinn, saovq, gikopoi, neets

You can use a VPN to connect to whatever Matrix server, and from there login to a Room like #room:server.com with the ID like @user:server.com . You can self-apply a nickname, like how D*scord or XMPP allow. I'm not sure what you mean by pseudonymously, but only the server you pick sees your IP address and knows your channel list; other servers/people just see the information that's meant to be public. Private messages and rooms have end-to-end encryption that's been audited.

To compare with IRC, the same kinds of data Rizon sees about you (nickname, username, IP address, channel list, message last sent time) are the kinds of data your Matrix server sees about you, but imagine if Rizon users could join synirc rooms from the Rizon server, or talk to Libera users. That's one way Matrix is fundamentally different from IRC and superior. If you can't find a server you decide to trust (either a large public one, or one ran by a friend, for reliable uptime etc) you can rent your own or even host a Matrix server on your home IP address.

The Tanasinn Wiki article has a list of Matrix servers and rooms.

I gave up irc after I started using Tor and vpns. There's something to be said about how simple the protocol is, how easy it is to even write a client, but the caveats that come out of necessity for old services like Rizon are too constricting and bottleneck the available audience.

funny i started using irc more with tordor and vuonpen

How does Matrix handle conference calls? Jitsi? I've had mixed success with that. Maybe we need a SAOVQ teamspeak server...
17 Name: VIPPER 2021-10-27 22:53
Well, as it turns out, my lapt... cyberdeck isn't adequately pimped out to hang with the hep cats. Lemme get back to you once I've rewritten dwm to my ideals and otherwise hyper-tweaked my interface.

21 Name: VIPPER 2021-10-31 01:10
why don't we all just return to irc?
22 Name: VIPPER 2021-10-31 05:19
run the ircd this time instead of using rizon
23 Name: VIPPER 2021-10-31 05:20
and open ircd peerings not even asking to use specific ircd federation protocol but there

You mean like irc.mellowchan.xyz or something more traditional?
27 Name: VIPPER 2021-11-10 16:24
irc is meant to be distributed but rfc2813 does not define a concrete protocol it defines standard line protocol messages and then allows nondeterminism on the protocol so its up to the ircd to define how messages broadcast across the network
if you consider allowing peers somewhat freely disallow extremely abusive peers and using opensource ircd that can run portability traditional then traditional
.xyz
irc.0chan.vip
bumped
can you dontunn desecrate the vip anymore ( ゚,_ゝ゚)
28 Name: VIPPER 2021-11-10 16:29
except for when rfc2813 strictly defines what MESSAGES should be broadcasted to the whole network or not and even then the ircd still defines how it reaches the whole network

IRC isn't really decentralized; its decentralization is more like load balancing
32 Name: ( ゚,_ゝ゚) 2021-11-11 01:48
noone said decentralised not even the rfcs they said distributed and broadcasted
you are looking for the word federated load balancing is the job of a vip router suite and packet marking also out of scope for the standards
dontunns like you make and promote broken dqn protocols which forced everyone onto the dqnweb
33 Name: VIPPER 2021-11-11 18:00
I'd love an IRC variant built upon latency-tolerant networking and infinite federation, transported in the Tor darknet between Onion hosts. The downside is building a distributed fed-visible inter-node routing table, and allowing the fed to capture all store-and-forward traffic in the network that it can worm its way to (i.e. full grab).
34 Name: VIPPER 2021-11-12 03:15
the federation is the biggest factor in ircs bad design
since this is so nondeterministic some ircds already have a distributed fedvisible internode routing table an example of viewing this is NODES for a certain ircd

Really provoked by some negative comments to this song. Some self-centrism ill-educated westerners don't know there's a traditional Japanese music genre called Enka, let alone "Tsugaru's winter scene" is one of the most common topos in lyrics of Enka. So they can never think about the logic behind this kind of arrangement(insert a piece of Enka in the middle of an electronic song). They judge everything starting from their owns poor acknowledgment (I guess their IQ is not high enough to support them thinking about the cultural diversity). They don’t hesitate to release their judgemental malice through the comment just like undomesticated wild dogs peeing everywhere.
