Anime is 99.999% shit these days. At least in manga there are a few series I can follow. I don't watch any anime series any more. The only anime I watch is the odd movie every 3rd or 4th year on average.

Gatchaman Crowds: Insight was good, at first I was like yeah it's okay but 3 or 4 episodes in I was excited for the next episode. Interesting commentary on herd mentality and human de-evolution, it made me think of Devo!

Wakaba Girl is a nice sweet anime about a rich girl who goes to school and wants to be a like normal girl. The episodes are short so you can fit one in if you have a short lunch break.

I started watching locodol, its a very cute and interesting show and portrays idol work as just that, work over anything else!

Its a very different look into idol stuff than all the other idol shows so I would almost rate it as highly as the masterpiece that is Aikatsu.

I think certain subs have explanations of the word play. But even then, why would you want to watch a series where all the jokes are explained. Word play isn't the only thing this series has though. I can't recall very well, but from what I've heard, their is discussion of philosophy, morals, and mathematics. I can kind of remember moral discussion, but I think it might have been a little preachy. As far as their discussion of mathematics and philosophy, I feel like they are the anime equivalent of Youtube science channel. People who watch that stuff watch it to feel smart, but not to actual learn anything.

Then again, I've only watched bakemonogatari and nisemonogatari, and it's been a while since I've seen either of those, so my memory is fuzzy. What I do recall though is how overly dramatic the series was and how serious it took itself. I'm pretty sure that's why I couldn't bring myself to watch another season of it.

Cowboy Bebop is an entry level anime of the worst kind.

This is a rather disappointing season to be honest. OPM, Osumatsusan, and Yuruyuri are the only things I actively look forward to that are new. I have my carry overs from previous seasons that I am content to watch. Basebros is always fun, and it was great getting the coaches flashback episode and seeing the implied relationship he has with the female scout. Ushio and Tora is enjoyable in that classic late 80s early 90s storytelling style. Monochrome is still enjoyable, but there is a slight drop off in the quality of the stories from the first season. There are a few others.

I wanted to like Peeping life, because the premise sounded good. A rotorscoped series by Comix Wave using classic anime characters to do short skits mixing up real life situations, but it just comes across as awkward and uncomfortable as watching actual Japanese people interact and the characters are little more than costumes with little of the actual character other than some shallow nod to backstory. Owarimonogatari just isn't doing it. Monogatari is at it's best when it balances the shallow pretension of depth with actual comedy. This season just feels stilted and poorly balanced. Heavy Object is a complete disappointment coming from the light novels. The animation completely fails to create the atmosphere of absolute terror and awe that the Objects are described with in the books. The majority of the humour was related to the idiocy and nonchalance of the protagonists as they scrape their way through these impossible scenarios that they absolutely should not survive. Without the gravity of Objects hanging over the characters and creating this feeling of morbid dread much of the excitement is lost and the gallows humour of two fools who are expecting to die at any second comes across flat. Lance n' Masques feels so strange I don't know if I should take it seriously as it seems to take itself. On the one hand the ridiculous plot is so bad that you know even the Japanese would find it trite and cliched. The character design looks like it came from a third tier circle that is still in school and trying to make a name for themselves. You would think that no production committee with a right mind would put this much time and effort into something that is so obviously destined to not sell and end up being a huge black mark on their name. It seems like there must be some sort of inevitable reveal that the director will think is oh so clever that it will recoup the losses from production and have some sort of net gain. It gives me a very strong feeling that something much alike the twist at the end of Gaworare, because for the story presented thus far to be the actual story is much more ridiculous than some contrived gimmicky twist at the end.

It's my first time back in a very long time so I will hold off on making my usual seasonal rundown and just leave you with the impressions right off the top of my head. Thank you all for reading this post and I hope to make many more.

The best shows of last season (imo) were One Punch Man and Subete Ga F Ni Naru, with Osomatsu-san as a strong runner up.

Subete was everything that Game of Laplace looked like it'd be before it became the disgusting, fermenting jar of shit it did -- I recommend it to people who are fans of mysteries, psychological dramas, and cigarettes.

The shorts this season are shaping up to be something special. Galko is a disgustingly honest examination of young women. Marshmallow is our now mandatory "GET MARRIED AND MAKE MORE TAXPAYERS," PSA that still manages to be charming and cute. Sekko Boys is shaping up to be a vicious comedy. Loli Landlady is cute as heck, but the cockblocking christmas cake definitely drags it down. Tabi Machi is some measure of compensation for Peeping Life. Despite being basically stills the story telling has, so far, been above average. I wouldn't want to follow the stories beyond the episode, but it is interesting being a tourist in these character's lives. Mizuki Mahou Shoujo is enjoyable, very very enjoyable. Lovely Muco is still very cute. Oh and I guess there is another season of Yamishibai. I will probably do what I usually do and wait for it to end before marathoning it.

There are a few things of interest in the standard length and several disappointments. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju so far has been the most engaging. The pacing and humor of the Rakugo requires a certain mindset to be funny and makes use of the subtle differences in performances to propel the story forward. The first episode which is combined with an OVA I believe sets up a tense story with very human and believable characters. The second episode begins to play with narrative and sets up several moments of a story within a story within a story. As it stands it will be very difficult to maintain the plot without sinking into melodrama to heighten tension. Never the less it is quite enjoyable so far. Osomatsu is continuing and seems to become more enjoyable as it progresses. Boku dake completely surprised me. When I hear a plot is centered around a mangaka I expect some very cliched shit about the struggle to create NEET food. However the plot of Boku dake uses a supernatural hook to give a intriguing experience. You should probably watching this. Gate S2(or second cour first season idk how they want to break this up) is not living up to either the manga or LN. Certain scenes are reframed and in doing so change the meaning. The little girl that is interested in the ambassador is much more upfront and forward towards him and it is heavily implied that she is pressured into trying to use him to gain a political marriage so her family may profit from the chaos of war. However in the anime adaptation it is presented as a spoiled child that is treated kindly by the ambassador and develops a crush on him. Besides the design change for the crown prince the beating scene after the earthquake really downplays his character, most likely to garner some semblance of pity towards him when the Rabbit Queen's plans come to fruition. This is another way to santize the new world beyond the gate. Instead of a hard cruel calculating culture built on suffering that deserves the righteous fury of the SDF force, they are presented as a slightly backwards nation that can become a multicultural paradise with a little effort. To be honest it is frustrating because it is a reflection of the weakness of the modern man who will not stand up and do what is right simply because it is right. The point of the original story is to say that imperialism is not necessarily wrong when your subjects are savages that can't care for their own *COUGH*Corea*COUGH*. If you are going to start watching Daiya no A, now is the time to start it. For the most part you can skip the rest of the series if you are not a fan of sports manga for the most part. This final battle of the Tournament is the climax of the story and there is no need to understand the back story as he drama and exposition will bring you up to speed. It is a decent story of shared struggle and indomitable will of good men. The Shogun Assassination Arc of Gintama is just wrapping up and it was an excellent return to the story after many satisfying, yet ultimately empty, filler episodes. The new Lupin the Third is visually excellent. The character designs are finally done justice with a decent budget spent on animation. Konosuika is an unsurprising disappointment. The timing of the LN and it's sense of humour was superb and is one of my favourite series currently being published. Sadly this did not translate well and it will be a boring generic harem. They have already skipped over most of the best jokes from the first chapters. Myriad Colors is more Kyoani trash. The animation in the first episode was excellent but the story is garbage pseudo-science with a heavy dosage of weak will male lead and pointless fanservice to try and snag whatever viewer they can. Nurse Witch Komugi has so little connection to either it's previous incarnation nor Soul Taker that one must question why they resurrected a long dead property when they could simply start anew. Phantasy Star Online is garbage. They had the chance to tell the story of the game world and instead squandered it on doing a high school action series about playing video games. Aokana is pointless. Oh and Active Raid and Bubuki Buranki both have terrible CG that hurts my eyes. Bubuki Buranki had the core of an excellent plot for the first half of the first episode and could have expanded on that for something unique and interesting. Instead it chose to crash and ended up being teenage chuunibyou with super powers. Active Raid could have been an interesting workplace comedy or a series exploring the technical and administrative difficulties of running a special operations unit while trying to balance public relations. However it tried to find a place between those two points and failed. I expect a great deal of yaoi doujinshi from it though, so I will continue my habit of not shaking hands with my cousin. That's all I am watching for now. I may pick up more if I drop something.

Dimension wwwwwwww knows of my love of cute robots and the toyota 2000gt. The anime adaptation is good so far. It doesn't throw it's pseudo-science nonsense in your face all the time like Phantom World and just sticks to the cool stuff. Pretty good for a new studio. But it's only 2 episodes in so I'm sure 3Hz will find a way to fuck it up anyway.

Been watching Squid Girl for the first time, only got the OVAs left now. I don't think they'll explain the mysterious girl who only appeared in the last episode of each season, which is a shame.
It was simple with very little in terms of character development, but I enjoyed it. Almost zero moeblob-ness in a mostly-girls SoL was a plus, too.

overall a meh/10, would instead recommend just about anything else unless you're satisfied with nice art and music, but why not watch something with nice art and music and good writing?

blitzed through gate s2...everyone seems to say something along the lines of "it was p good, not quite as good as s1 but still good" and yeah, that's about right...there were a couple things that rubbed me wrong, like when they went to fight the dragon and added some warrior elves to their party, spent time training them to use weapons, and then by the end ofc every one of the redshirts is dead and the mains are just scratched up and tired and not remotely affected by the (what would've been massive at that range, they even animate it) shockwave from the explosives they set off...like they spend so much effort on some details and then completely ignore others

there was a scene where they spent effort humanizing some of the imperial soldiers, showing that they're not really behind their superiors' unethical orders but they're cooperating out of fear, and then a bit later the jsdf ("the good guys") show up and massacre literally everybody, no prisoners or survivors except the guy issuing the orders in the first place, and then trot home all triumphant because they saved a handful of people...like yeah you're gonna get peace eventually, you've spent the entire show pureeing soldiers by the tens of thousands in a world where victory usually means beating down a handful of percent of the other guy's army and getting him to say "okay fine I'm not gonna let any more of my men die because we need to survive economically too" and man the more I think about this series the less it makes sense

New rebuild theatrical trailer got cam leaked and it looks fucking terrible. Anno seems to have gone full flashy transforming action scenes and epic battles.

Also NNB S3 soon. We should be around V8 if I recall. Repeat and the OVAs managed to fill in all the holes the first season made. I am only on V10 right now so unless they decide to jump ahead we should probably end up having most of 9-10 adapted. I don't think they want to make a mistake like they did with S1 where the directer cherry picked vingettes to use and caused the whole mess to begin with.
